Cyclone Rep presents their newest production, Hamlet:Cybermadness. With this new show, Cyclone Rep continues their mission to make the works of Shakespeare relevant and accessible to all audiences. Following a tour of Ireland for the new production, Cyclone Rep will bring the show to Haus am Westbahnhoff Kulturcentrum in Landau, Germany.

Their adaptation of the play is set in the modern day and focus on madness, a key theme in Shakespeare’s play. In Shakespeare’s day, many mental health problems were simply labelled as ‘madness’, also a key theme in Hamlet. In this production, we propose that young Hamlet’s ‘madness’ is fuelled by his addiction to smartphone technology, resulting in anxiety, paranoia, feelings of isolation and depression. Hamlet:CyberMadness will showcase great performances, enlightening discussions and the use of modern technology for an innovative take on this timeless classic that connects with the audience by bringing Hamlet and Shakespeare’s language into their world and times.

Cyclone Rep has been performing innovative and inspirational work since 1998. They have grown to become Ireland’s leading provider of Shakespeare’s plays for secondary schools and general audiences. Their mission is to produce theatrical interpretations of Shakespeare’s classics that are engaging and stimulate critical reflection. A key interpretative method is to present Shakespeare’s plays in a modern context with topical themes such as the scourge of racism in Othello: The Colour of Skin or environmental catastrophe in King Lear: Nature Amok.

The company’s productions have been developed in response to their audience’s feedback for work that is meaningful and fulfils their needs.  Following each performance, Cyclone Rep requests written or e-feedback from the audience through Twitter, Facebook, the website or email. The aim is to continually evolve the productions to have a substantial artistic and meaningful impact on the stakeholders.
