What do 18th-century German emigrants in Limerick have in common with mustard and heartache in modern-day Dublin? Nothing? Oh yes they do! They stand for new Irish drama, which the Staatstheater Mainz will present and develop in Germany together with Fishamble – The New Play Company. In an exciting double project, two great female Irish Writers will present their work to the German public.

Award-winning playwright Deirdre Kinahan (Der Vorfall) will take up a writing residency in March 2024 to research and develop a new play Off to New Shores! exploring the story of the Palatines, a small German emigrant community in Ireland. In May the PLUG&PLAY Festival for Young Directors will host a guest performance of Mustard by the brilliant Eva O’Connor.

Fishamble is an Irish theatre company that discovers, develops and produces new plays of national importance with a global reach. It has toured its productions to audiences throughout Ireland, and to 20 other countries. It champions the role of the playwright, typically supporting over 50% of the writers of all new plays produced on the island of Ireland each year. Fishamble has received many awards in Ireland and internationally, including an Olivier Award.

Current and recent productions include: King and Silent by Pat Kinevane which has won many major international awards on tour throughout the world; Heaven by Eugene O’Brien in New York and Edinburgh where it won a Scotsman Fringe First Award; the multi-award winning Mustard by Eva O’Connor on tour in Ireland, UK and US; and On Blueberry Hill by Sebastian Barry which toured in Europe, Off-Broadway, transferred to the West End, and was recorded by Audible. It produced four major productions as part of Ireland’s Decade of Centenaries, which were Embargo and Outrage by Deirdre Kinahan, and Inside the GPO and The Treaty by Colin Murphy.
