Dán

Multidisciplinary piece with dance, voice, electronic music and literature

29 August - 31 August

Berlin

Event Categories:

Dán is a multidisciplinary live performance that weaves together various artistic mediums to celebrate and respond to the work of contemporary Irish female poets. This production seamlessly combines the expressive power of dance, voice, acting, and original electronic sound composition, delivering an intimate and unforgettable experience.

Drawing inspiration from the rich tradition of Irish poets such as Eavan Boland and Alice Kinsella, and their respective experiences within the vibrant German artistic scene, these contemporary artists bridge cultural and generational gaps. Dán seamlessly melds the past with the present and the local with the global through the unique lens of contemporary Irish female literary voices. It’s a performance that transcends borders and time, inviting international audiences to embark on a journey through the poetic landscape of Ireland.

The creative ensemble behind Dán primarily consists of Irish artists who are now based in Berlin. These creatives include choreographer and director Marguerite Donlon, actor and playwright Mary Kelly, composer and DJ Dara Smith, and dancer Camilla Matteucci.

Marguerite Donlon is a contemporary choreographer, theatre director, and curator based in Berlin and Osnabrück. After a soloist dance career with the English national ballet in London and later with the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, she began her international choreographic career in 1999. Donlon has been a ballet director for several theatres in Germany, including Saarländisches Staatstheater and, most recently, Theater Osnabrück. She is currently working as a freelance choreographer for theatre and dance companies worldwide.

Mary Kelly is an actor and playwright (published by Nick Hern Books, London and Stinging Fly, Dublin) based in Berlin and working in Germany since 2011. She previously worked at The Gate Theatre with Second Age Theatre Company, Guna Nua Theatre Company and more, and she toured her own work nationally.

Dara Smith is an Irish visual artist, art director and musician based in Berlin since 2011. He has trained and worked in both the visual and audio sides of the industry. He loves communicating and telling stories, both linear and interactive, through a wide range of mediums and platforms. He has released electronic music and performed worldwide as Lakker with Ian Mc Donnell and solo as Arad.

Camilla Matteucci is a freelance dancer and teacher based in Berlin. She has performed with with many theatres in Germany such as the Staatsoper Hannover, Theatre Nordhausen and Theatre Osnabrueck. In the last two years Camilla has worked as the choreographic assistant to Marguerite Donlon.
