Eine Stimme finden / Finding a Voice involves three separate strands of activity aimed at strengthening Ireland’s ties with Germany in relation to women and music.

In the first strand, Discovering, Finding a Voice will collaborate with the Archiv Frau und Musik in Frankfurt on a series of events including lecture-workshops on women and music in Ireland and choral music by Irish women composers, developing the Archiv’s holdings of music by Irish women composers.

The second strand, Reflections & Inspirations, focuses on works by living Irish composers who have been inspired by Clara Schumann. These include Reflections on a Theme by Clara Schumann, commissioned by Finding a Voice for the composer’s bicentenary in 2019, and Jane O’Leary’s Clara for clarinet and speaker inspired by the life of Clara Schumann, which will be performed in Leipzig by clarinettist Paul Roe and pianist Mary Dullea alongside works by Clara Schumann.

The third and final strand, Gathering/Performing will bring together Irish performers and composers in Dresden for performances of two recent electroacoustic works by Irish composer Gráinne Mulvey. Great Women (2021) and …Until the Women are Free (2022) explore the roles of Irish women through history are commissioned by Finding a Voice for mezzo-soprano Aylish Kerrigan.

Finding a Voice is a multi-day festival of music by female composers through the ages and around the world, in celebration of International Women’s Day, 8th March. Annually located in the Irish town of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Finding a Voice features performances from leading Irish and international musicians of unforgettable music by remarkable women.

Since is foundation in 2017, Finding a Voice has featured music by hundreds of women composers, from the twelfth-century mystic Hildegard of Bingen to newly commissioned works by Irish composers. The festival programmes traditional music, jazz, film music and musical theatre alongside Baroque, Classical and contemporary works.
